Introduction: Hypothyroidism is a disease that reduces production of thyroid hormones (T4 &­T3) and it is one of the potential causes of mental disorders. In addition to somatic signs and symptoms, some other problems such as depression, anxiety, stress, psychomotor delayed and cognitive disorder are seen in hypothyroidism.  The purpose of this study is to compare anxiety and stress indices in patients with hypothyroidism who are under regular medication regimen with health group.

Methods: In this comparative - descriptive study Anxiety and stress measured by DASS-21 questionnaire in 30 hypothyroid women’s who referred to subspecialty endocrinology clinic.

Results: The samples were composed  of  30 females with  hypothyroidism  (25- 40 years old)  who were under regular medication regimen (TSH : 1-3)  with any somatic or mental disorder which  compared with 30 health females  that was matched  in age and sex and thyroid hormone level with no significant past medical history. Analysis showed that Stress and anxiety were more common in hypothyroid patients who were under regular medication regimen compared with normal group (P<.01).

Conclusion: stress and anxiety symptoms were more common in hypothyroid patients who were under regular medication regimen compared with health group. Then the admission of psychotherapy in hypothyroid patients might be recommended in addition to regular medication regimen with Levothyroxine.
