Introduction: Suicide as a psychiatric emergency is one of the greatest problems of today’s societies. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of dialectical behavior therapy in reducing suicidal thoughts (suicidal ideations) in suicide attempters with a history of previous suicide.

Materials and Methods: The method of this study was a quasi-experimental study with two groups; experimental group and control group. The study population consisted of all patients that had attempted suicide, and were refered to priviate medical centers during fall and winter of 2012. The sample consisted of 32 females, who had attempted suicide with a score of one standard deviation above the average test grades of suicidal thoughts, had at least intermediate level of education, and history of suicide attempt. Beck’s diagnostic interview and structured interviews were performed for all participants. Dialectical behavior therapy for groups, during a four-month period (2 to 2.30 hours per week) was performed. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance with the SPSS software.

Results: The results showed that dialectical behavior therapy significantly reduced the rate of suicide and the score of the experimental group (P=0.029).

Conclusion: Suicidal thoughts can lead to suicide attempts. In the field of treatment of suicidal ideation and those who are living in a state of crisis, dialectical behavior therapy due to its nature, seems to be very efficient and promising.
