Introduction: The present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the prevalence of vaginismus and some psychological factors related to it in married women.
Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2017 on 288 married women in Tehran (Iran). Participants were selected by available method. Data collection tools included personal characteristics questionnaire and sexual autonomy questionnaires, women's sexual performance index, Eysenck's guilt, Enrich's marital satisfaction, body image concern and defense mechanisms. Data analysis was done using SPSS statistical software (version 16) and correlation tests and stepwise regression model.
Results: In the analysis of the results, according to the mean and standard deviation of 8.06 and 4.08, the prevalence of symptoms of vaginismus disorder was estimated at 16.6% (49 women). The obtained results show that there is a positive relationship between the symptoms of vaginismus disorder (the higher the score of the person in this scale, the lower the severity of the disorder) with concern about body image and marital satisfaction, and there is a negative relationship with rational justification. Also, there is no significant relationship between guilt, various defense mechanisms and sexual autonomy with symptoms of vaginismus disorder. The stepwise regression results showed that the linear combination of marital satisfaction (B = 0.71, P = 0.001) and rational justification (B = - 0.001, P = 0.13) were predictors of vaginismus disorders in these women.
Conclusion: In women with lower marital satisfaction, the rate of vaginismus disorder was. If a person has a favorable image of his body and at the same time the level of marital satisfaction is low, she unconsciously suffers vaginismus in order to maintain himself for a better marital relationship. The stronger a person's rational justification for not having a relationship is, the less she tries to face her fears and have sex.
