سازمان‌های بهداشتی درمانی همچون بیمارستان نقش بسزایی بر محیط‌زیست اطراف خود دارد و با در نظر گرفتن نوع فعالیت و نحوه اثرگذاری آن‌ها بر محیط‌زیست می‌توان به اهمیت این مراکز پی برد. جامعه جهانی طی دهه‌های متمادی الگوهای گوناگونی برای جلوگیری از اثرات مخرب محیط زیستی توسط سازمان‌های مختلف طراحی و تدوین کرده است. این الگوها در بخش بهداشت و درمان، شاخص‌های مختلفی را شامل می‌شود. شاخص‌های شرح داده‌شده شامل مدیریت زیست‌محیطی، طراحی ساختمان و محیط، مصرف انرژی و آب، کیفیت و آلاینده‌های هوا، تردد بیمار و کارکنان، پسماند، خرید ارجح زیست‌محیطی و مواد شیمیایی می‌باشد. با توجه به اهمیت شاخص‌های مدنظر و تأثیرات آن بر عملکرد بیمارستان، سعی بر این است تا در این مطالعه که به‌صورت مرور نقلی انجام‌شده است، مروری بر شاخص‌های مدنظر و دلایل اهمیت آن شود.
